Suffrage100MA Background
Suffrage100MA is a non-profit, non-partisan organization, with over 200 Partners, dedicated to sharing the history/herstory of the incredible suffragists who fought for over 72 years to achieve adoption of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1920, prohibiting the federal and state governments from denying the right to vote on the basis of sex, and other laws that needed to be changed to enable Native American, Asian American and African American women and men to vote, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Unfortunately, access to the ballot is again under attack with the recent enactment of voting restrictions in many states, a continuation of the concerted effort to restrict voting rights and voter access. The right to vote is a fundamental right that cannot be taken for granted and must be protected. Suffrage100MA uses our platforms to remind us all to appreciate, value, and exercise the right to vote!
Since 2010, Suffrage100MA has hosted and participated in many events, and continues to do so, including making a 30 minute film to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment: “The Fight For Women’s Suffrage: Looking Back, Marching Forward!”
With the centennial having concluded in 2020, Suffrage100MA engaged in and completed a visioning process and determined that our work is not finished! We have decided are “staying open” and continue to provide events and programs to educate the public about the history of women’s suffrage and women’s history more broadly, to inspire people to vote, and to work for voting access.
Most significantly, our immediate goal is to transform our current Suffrage100MA website into an online “Massachusetts Women’s History Center” (“MWHC,” tentative working name) and perhaps ultimately to open a “brick and mortar” Center.
